The old town of Matera, one of the oldest cities in the world, is completely built into the rocks. Although you do not see this from the very first glance, the streets just like those of other ancient villages, all houses go (deep) into the rocks. Sometimes up to tens of meters deep. Today no one lives there, but it is certainly not abandoned. Tourist shops settled in the old houses where other give an insight into how people lived here decades ago (until 1950).
People were forced out of there homes for hygienic reasons, they lived with all there livestock without any running water. People got moved to the surrounding houses forming the new Matera. Make sure to visit one of the houses (entrance around €2,-) as it shows just how people used to live here.
