The Chapel of Bones (Capela dos Ossos) in Evora is as the name suggests, a (church) chapel decorated with human bones and skulls. It was a room for meditation and prayer and to show what will become of you when dead. The inscription at the entrance reads; "We bones that are here, we are waiting for yours". The bones used to decorated the chapel came from the local graveyard (an estimated 5000).
The Chapel of Bones is now part of a (small) museum. Tickets for the Chapel of Bones include a visit to the museum. Besides bones to decorate the Chapel two desiccated corpses, one of which is a child, dangle from ropes.
