Blue Penguins are the smallest penguin species and look rather cute as they come ashore and have to jump over (too) large rocks. As night falls (or just cases) the groups come in closer. They form these groups for the coast to work together to make the final part. Although small, you can see them coming ashore pretty good. Then they jump between the rocks up to their safe nest (mostly in litter pens). An unique sight!
The exact time is difficult to predict, so we waited over 2 hours, but as night falls is usually a good indication. When the sun is just set they come in groups at once ashore. Free in contrast to the $ 25, - to be paid at the "Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony ". If you're (too) early there is the possibility to spot Yellow Eyed Penguins coming ashore in the nearby area, they generally come ashore slightly earlier.
